CHISATO MINAMIMURA

I am a Deaf performance artist and BSL (British Sign Language) art guide working globally with a particular interest in the visualisation of sound and music from my Deaf perspective, and using digital to share my experience of sensory perception and human encounters.

Current Project: Mark of A Woman

Mark of A Woman is a new live digital performance project by Chisato, celebrating and exploring personal histories and authentic accounts of the under-told relationships between women and tattooing cultures.

Using Visual Vernacular, digital animation, kinetic projection and Woojer™ technology, this is an exciting, accessible new exploration into women’s social, cultural and historical relationships to body marking.

The premiere performance was shown at The Place, London in November 2023.

Commissioned by The Place and BAC, supported using public funds from Arts Council England. Supported by Pavilion Dance South West, Wellcome Collection and Auckland Arts Festival. Mark of a Woman is an Unlimited UK Partner Award 2023 commission with Southbank Centre made possible thanks to funding from Arts Council England.

Ongoing project: Scored in Silence

“Scored in Silence” is Chisato’s Digital Solo Performance, an artistic documentary that unpacks the untold tales of deaf hibakusha – survivors of the A-Bombs that fell in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 – and their experiences at the time.

“Scored in Silence” was selected for the British Council Edinburgh Fringe Festival Showcase in 2019, and subsequently toured to Canada, Germany, HK and Tunisia.

It has also pivoted to a Digital Season, with online workshops and screenings taking place in Canada, Chile, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, South Korea, the UK and Venezuela.
